Reviews, Reddit and local press: the sources AI assistants lean on in Toronto

AI assistants build local answers from reviews, community threads and local media. Here's how Toronto businesses can earn a place in those sources honestly.

Key takeaways

  • When AI assistants answer local questions, they often lean on what other people have written about a business, not just the business’s own website.
  • In Toronto, that usually means review platforms, community discussions like r/askTO, local press and city guides, and trusted directories.
  • You can earn a presence in these places honestly. Fake reviews and planted Reddit posts are not a shortcut, and we won’t help with them.
  • Many assistants show their sources, so you can check which ones mention you and track it over time.

Why other people’s words carry weight

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google’s AI Mode for “a good brunch spot in Leslieville” or “a reliable roofer in Scarborough,” and you’ll usually get a short list with a sentence or two about each option. Look closely at where those sentences come from. Often they echo reviews, a Reddit thread, a BlogTO roundup or a directory listing, rather than the business’s own homepage.

That makes sense: an assistant has more to work with when several independent sources say similar things. We don’t claim to know exactly how any assistant weighs one source against another, and those systems change. But the pattern of which sources appear in answers is observable, and it’s consistent enough to act on. If you’re new to this topic, our explainer on how ChatGPT recommends local businesses is a good place to start.

The main types of sources

Review platforms

Google reviews are the obvious one, but they’re not alone. Depending on your industry, assistants may also draw on Yelp, HomeStars for trades and home services, RateMDs for clinics and practitioners, and TripAdvisor or OpenTable for restaurants. What matters isn’t only your star rating. The words in reviews describe what you do, who you serve and what people liked, which is exactly the kind of detail an assistant can summarize.

Community discussions

Toronto is a city that asks Reddit for recommendations. Threads on r/askTO and r/toronto, plus neighbourhood subreddits, regularly turn up in search results and AI answers for “where should I go for…” questions. These threads carry weight because they read like real people talking, which is also why they need the most care.

Local press and city guides

BlogTO, Toronto Life, Narcity, neighbourhood papers and specialist blogs publish roundups, openings and features. A mention in a “best of” list or a short write-up gives assistants independent, editorial language about your business.

Directories, associations and registers

Your BIA’s member directory, your chamber of commerce, industry associations and regulators’ public registers (for example, the Law Society of Ontario’s lawyer directory or RECO’s registrant search for real estate) are dull but useful. They confirm that you exist, what you do and where.

Your own website

Your site still matters. It’s where the facts should be clearest and most complete. Other sources just help confirm that those facts are true.

How to earn a presence, honestly

Reviews. Ask every customer, at the right moment, with a direct link. Don’t pick and choose who gets asked, don’t offer incentives, and respond to what people write. If you’re a clinic or law firm, make sure your RateMDs or industry listings are claimed and accurate. Our Google Business Profile checklist covers reviews and responses in more detail.

Reddit. If you want to take part, do it as yourself. Read each subreddit’s rules first, since many limit self-promotion. Answer questions in your area of expertise, say plainly that you own or work at the business, and don’t push. A contractor who explains how to spot a bad flat-roof repair, and mentions where they work only when it’s relevant, is adding something. Most of the time, the best Reddit strategy is simply being the kind of business people mention without being asked.

Local press. Journalists and editors want stories, not ads. Things that tend to interest local media include a genuine opening or expansion, a neighbourhood event, an unusual menu or service, a useful seasonal angle, or real expertise on a topic in the news. Keep a short, clear “about” page and good photos ready so it’s easy to write about you.

Directories and associations. Claim the listings that matter in your industry, make your name, address and phone number match everywhere, and remove duplicates. Join your BIA’s directory if you’re a member.

Practical tip: make a list of the five places a friend would check before trying a business like yours in Toronto. Those are your priority sources. You don’t need to be everywhere, just accurate and present where people actually look.

What to avoid

We’ll be direct about this: we don’t write fake reviews, buy reviews, run fake Reddit accounts or plant “recommendations” posing as customers, and we’d advise you not to either. Beyond being dishonest, it’s risky.

  • Fake or purchased reviews break the rules of every major platform, can get reviews removed or a profile flagged, and can raise concerns under Canada’s rules on misleading advertising, which the Competition Bureau has applied to fake reviews.
  • Incentivized or gated reviews, such as discounts for five stars or only asking happy customers, also break most platforms’ policies.
  • Astroturfing on Reddit with sock-puppet accounts or undisclosed staff posts tends to get noticed by moderators and regulars. Once a business is called out in a thread, that thread can keep showing up for a long time.
  • Paid placements sold as editorial. Be cautious of anyone offering guaranteed spots on “best of” lists. If it’s paid, it should be disclosed.

The honest route is slower, but it builds something that holds up.

How to see which sources mention you

Many assistants show their sources, which makes this easier than it sounds.

  1. Write down ten real questions a customer might ask, in their words. Mix in neighbourhoods and needs: “kid-friendly dentist in North York,” “emergency plumber Etobicoke,” “best pho near the Annex.”
  2. Ask them in several tools: ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google with AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  3. Note who’s mentioned and which sources are linked. Keep a simple spreadsheet with the question, the tool, the date, whether you appeared, and the cited sources.
  4. Repeat monthly. Answers vary by wording, location, time and sometimes the person asking, so look for patterns rather than reacting to a single result.
  5. Check your analytics. In Google Analytics, look at referral traffic from sites like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. It won’t capture everything, but it shows whether AI tools are sending people your way.

Over a few months, you’ll see which sources keep appearing for businesses like yours.

Bringing it together

Assistants tend to reflect what the city already says about you. The work is making sure that what’s out there is accurate, current and earned: genuine reviews, real participation, a story worth covering and listings that match.
